Pittsburgh, PA – Residents across western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio should prepare for frosty mornings later this week, according to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh.
A weak trough is expected to move through the region Wednesday, ushering in much colder air for Thursday and Friday mornings. Forecast lows are expected to drop into the low to mid-30s, with widespread frost possible under clear skies and calm winds.
The NWS says frost is most likely to develop early Thursday and Friday mornings, particularly in rural valleys and outlying communities north and east of Pittsburgh. Cities including Butler, Indiana, Beaver, and New Castle, PA, as well as Youngstown and Salem, OH, could see temperatures hover near or below freezing.
Meteorologists note that the cloud cover will be minimal during the overnight hours, increasing the potential for radiational cooling and frost formation.
Officials recommend protecting sensitive vegetation and outdoor plumbing, especially for growers and gardeners still within the late-season growing window.
Warmer daytime temperatures are expected to return by the weekend, bringing a brief break from the chilly mornings.
