Eastern North Dakota Storm Alert: Hail, 70 MPH Winds, and Lightning Through Tuesday Night

Grand Forks, ND – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across eastern North Dakota and parts of northwest Minnesota through Tuesday night, with the greatest impacts near Valley City and Lisbon, where a level 2 of 5 severe weather risk is in effect. Hail up to the size of quarters, damaging wind gusts near 70 mph, and dangerous lightning are all in play.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the primary storm window opens Tuesday afternoon and intensifies into the evening. Areas farther east into west-central Minnesota, including counties around East Grand Forks, are under a level 1 risk with scattered storms possible. Spotter activation may be needed.

Wednesday: A brief lull follows with only a 40% chance of storms before skies clear overnight.

Thursday into Friday: A renewed storm surge is expected, with Thursday night carrying a 50% chance of strong storms. Friday holds the highest concern, with potential for large hail, damaging winds, and even isolated tornadoes.

Residents should secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and prepare for possible power disruptions later this week.

Additional warnings or advisories could be issued by late Wednesday.
