Newport, North Carolina – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for large portions of eastern North Carolina as heavy snow and strong winds are expected to create dangerous, potentially life-threatening travel conditions through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, 9 to 14 inches of snow are forecast across Beaufort, Greene, Lenoir, Martin, and Pitt counties, with locally higher amounts possible. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are expected to accompany the storm. The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. EST Sunday.
Communities under the warning include Greenville, Kinston, Washington, Williamston, Farmville, Snow Hill, La Grange, Bethel, Robersonville, Aurora, and Bath.
Forecasters warn that whiteout conditions are expected at times, with blowing snow significantly reducing visibility. Travel may become treacherous and potentially life-threatening, particularly during periods of intense snowfall and strong wind. Roads are likely to become impassable, and emergency response may be delayed.
Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches, increasing the risk of power outages and blocked roadways. Snowfall rates combined with wind may overwhelm road treatment efforts, especially overnight and in rural areas.
The National Weather Service urges residents to delay all travel if possible. Those who must travel should use extreme caution and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight. Road conditions across North Carolina can be checked by calling 511.
Snowfall totals of this magnitude are rare in eastern North Carolina and may result in prolonged disruptions to transportation, schools, and essential services through the weekend. Commuters, students, and shift workers should prepare for extended closures and hazardous conditions.
Residents are encouraged to closely monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local emergency management officials as the storm develops.
