Wilmington, N.C. – After a string of dry, sunny days, storm chances are set to return along the North Carolina coast beginning late Sunday and lasting through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, skies will remain mostly sunny Thursday through Saturday, with afternoon highs in the mid-80s and comfortable overnight lows near 66 to 68 degrees. Winds will stay light, though residents should expect some humidity to build heading into the weekend.

By Sunday afternoon, showers and thunderstorms are possible, with rain chances climbing to 40 percent. The unsettled weather continues into Labor Day and Tuesday, when scattered storms could disrupt outdoor plans from Wilmington to Leland and across New Hanover and Brunswick Counties. Storms may bring heavy downpours and brief gusty winds, though widespread severe weather is not anticipated at this time.

Travelers using I-40 and U.S. 17 during the holiday period should watch for wet roads and reduced visibility in heavier showers. Outdoor events, including beach gatherings and barbecues, could be interrupted by quick-moving storms. Emergency officials recommend keeping an eye on the sky and having a backup plan for outdoor activities.

The wet pattern looks to linger through at least Wednesday, with storm chances hovering around 30 percent each afternoon.
