Morehead City, N.C. – Hazardous marine conditions are making today one of the most dangerous days of the season for small boats along the North Carolina coast. Strong northeasterly winds are expected to gust over 35 mph with seas building up to 7 feet in some offshore waters.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, small craft advisories are in effect across nearly all eastern North Carolina waters, except the Neuse River, Pamlico River, and Pungo River. Advisories are expected to last through tonight as the pressure gradient between high pressure to the north and low pressure to the south continues to tighten.

Boaters in areas such as Beaufort, Morehead City, and Hatteras are urged to avoid non-essential trips as conditions may capsize smaller vessels. Ferries could also face delays, and coastal residents should be prepared for rough surf and potential minor coastal flooding.

The NWS advises those on the water to wear life jackets, avoid traveling alone, and check with local marine authorities before departure. Conditions should gradually ease by Tuesday, but additional advisories may be issued if winds remain strong.
