The air feels crisp and still across Carteret County this morning, with the faint shimmer of patchy frost on rooftops and fields inland from the coast. At 5 a.m., temperatures hover in the 30s near Newport and climb toward 50°F closer to Morehead City’s waterfront. It’s a calm, classic start to a November morning — and the kind of cool that quickly gives way to a mild, sun-filled weekend.

Today warms quickly under mostly sunny skies, reaching the lower 70s by afternoon as light east winds turn southerly. The breeze picks up Saturday, helping push highs into the mid-70s — well above normal for early November. Outdoor events, coastal travel, or yardwork will enjoy ideal conditions with low humidity and gentle winds most of the day.

But by late Saturday night, clouds begin to build. A weak cold front nudges into the region Sunday, bringing scattered showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms along the Crystal Coast and inland toward Kinston and New Bern. Most rainfall totals will stay light, but any storm could bring brief downpours or gusty wind.

By Monday, skies clear and cooler, drier air filters in again, keeping highs in the upper 50s to near 60°F. Veterans Day looks sunny and pleasant, perfect for ceremonies and travel.

Looking ahead, forecasters see another mild stretch midweek before temperatures trend downward late next week. For now, Eastern North Carolina enjoys one of its last warm weekends before late fall settles in — a gentle pause before the next shift toward cooler November air.
