Newport, N.C. – Heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding are set to impact eastern North Carolina beginning Thursday afternoon, with hazards stretching into next week. The National Weather Service warns that scattered thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor activities across coastal counties, including Carteret, Onslow, and Dare.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, showers and storms will become more widespread after 2 p.m. Thursday, bringing rainfall amounts of up to a quarter inch, with higher totals possible in heavier downpours. These conditions could trigger localized street flooding in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.

Marine conditions will deteriorate further late Sunday night as long-period swell from distant Tropical System Erin reaches the coast. The swells are expected to increase the risk of dangerous rip currents from Ocracoke to Hatteras and along the Northern Outer Banks through much of next week.

Residents are advised to avoid swimming in unguarded waters, secure small watercraft, and prepare for periods of reduced visibility on roads during heavy rain. Boaters should monitor updates and be ready for possible small craft advisories.

Hazardous conditions could persist through Tuesday, with additional alerts possible as Erin’s swell continues impacting the region.
