Newport, NC – Strong thunderstorms are expected to push into Carteret County by Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, frequent lightning, and gusty winds that could impact evening travel. The most intense storms are likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., with outdoor activities and beach trips at risk of sudden disruption.

According to the National Weather Service, Wednesday’s high will climb near 85°F before storms develop along a weak cold front. Winds from the southwest at 5 to 9 mph, with gusts near 15 mph, could strengthen in storms. Rainfall amounts may range from a half inch to more than an inch in localized downpours, raising concerns for ponding on low-lying roads, especially near Beaufort, Morehead City, and U.S. 70 corridors.

Drivers should allow extra time for commutes, avoid flooded areas, and secure outdoor items before storms arrive. Lightning can strike several miles from the rain core, so residents are urged to seek shelter indoors when thunder is heard.

The unsettled weather will ease overnight, but more scattered showers and storms remain possible through Thursday. Alerts could be extended if the front stalls offshore.
