Morehead City, NC – Residents along the North Carolina coast are being urged to prepare for coastal flooding and dangerous surf conditions this week as Tropical Storm Imelda lingers offshore.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, strong northeast winds from Tuesday through Thursday will bring peak gusts of 30–40 mph along the Outer Banks, with inland areas seeing 20–25 mph. While forecast wind speeds have trended lower, officials caution that flooding concerns remain significant.

A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for southern Pamlico Sound and the ocean-side Outer Banks. Vulnerable portions of Highway 12 on Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands may become impassable due to ocean overwash and erosion near dune structures. Minor to moderate flooding is also expected along the southern Pamlico Sound, Neuse River, and Bay River.

Large breaking waves and a high risk of rip currents will make area beaches hazardous for swimming throughout the week. “Dangerous surf conditions will persist from Monday through much of the upcoming week,” forecasters warned.

Rainfall totals are expected to remain low, with most areas north of Highway 70 seeing less than one inch of rain. Communities south of Highway 70 may receive one to two inches. Flash flooding risk has decreased with Imelda’s more offshore track.

Despite the lowered rainfall potential, officials stress that the combination of strong winds, persistent swell, and tidal flooding could disrupt travel and damage vulnerable coastal infrastructure. Residents and visitors are urged to avoid driving through flooded areas and to monitor updates from local authorities.
