Greenville, N.C. – Damaging winds and large hail could impact evening commutes and outdoor plans across eastern North Carolina as a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 349 includes 15 counties, stretching from inland towns like Greenville and Kinston to coastal communities such as Morehead City, Nags Head, and Ocracoke. Storms capable of producing gusts over 60 mph and quarter-size hail could move through the region into the night.
The alert covers major cities and towns including Jacksonville, New Bern, Washington, and Manteo. Coastal areas like Emerald Isle and Rodanthe may also experience brief heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and sudden wind shifts, making boating and beach activities dangerous. Local officials urge residents to seek shelter indoors and avoid driving during downpours or high wind periods.
Travelers on U.S. Routes 17, 70, and 264 should use extra caution as visibility may drop quickly during passing storms. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and monitor weather alerts closely.
Severe conditions are expected to taper off after 11 p.m., but additional watches or warnings could be issued if storm intensity increases.
