Newport and coastal Carteret County could see strong thunderstorms Thursday, with locally heavy rain and gusty winds threatening roads and outdoor plans from late morning through Thursday night. Intermittent showers and thunder will persist much of this week, but Thursday’s storms may pack the biggest punch—bringing quick downpours, lightning, and brief flooding.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers will continue into Wednesday, but a cold front pushing through Thursday afternoon will boost storm chances and could deliver gusts up to 18 mph. The heaviest rain and strongest winds are expected from midday Thursday into Thursday night, tapering off by Friday morning. Motorists should watch for slick roads, brief flooding, and isolated power outages, especially near low-lying neighborhoods and US-70.

Wednesday:
Mostly cloudy, high near 83°F. Showers and thunderstorms possible; risk increases late.
Thursday:
Thunderstorms likely after 2 p.m., some strong. High near 84°F, gusts up to 18 mph.
Friday:
Lingering showers early, then clearing. Breezy, high near 85°F.
Saturday:
Warmer, scattered afternoon showers and storms. High 86°F.
Sunday:
Drier and mostly sunny, just a slight chance of a stray shower. High 87°F.

Thunderstorm chances remain elevated through Friday morning, with roads slick and possible localized flooding. Residents should charge devices, secure outdoor furniture, and monitor weather alerts—additional advisories could be issued if storms intensify.
