Morehead City, N.C. – Muggy air and rising temperatures will give way to scattered showers and thunderstorms across eastern North Carolina by Thursday afternoon, with the highest rain chances centered around New Bern and Kenansville.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s inland, with Greenville and Hamilton topping out at 90°F and Plymouth hitting 91°F. Rain chances range from 10% along the Outer Banks to 37% near Kenansville and Wallace, especially between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Residents in Jacksonville, Kinston, and New Bern should anticipate brief downpours and potential lightning. While severe weather is not expected, isolated storms could bring gusty winds and localized ponding on roads. The combination of heat and humidity will make it feel even warmer, so limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.

Beach communities from Frisco to Cedar Island may escape most of the rain, but should still monitor skies, especially by evening. Mariners can expect quiet conditions until early Friday, when more organized showers shift offshore.

Storm chances taper overnight, but unsettled weather could return into the weekend.
