NEW BERN, N.C. – Eastern North Carolina woke up to its coldest morning of the fall season Friday, with widespread 30s reported inland and 40s along the coast. The chill was most pronounced in Geneseo, where temperatures bottomed out at 33 degrees — the lowest reading across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, the cold air settled in under clear skies and calm winds overnight, allowing temperatures to dip well below normal for mid-October. Greenville, Plymouth, and Snow Hill all recorded morning lows in the upper 30s, while Kinston and Cape Carteret hovered near 40.
Drivers across Lenoir, Pitt, and Craven counties faced frosty windshields early Friday, with some rural areas seeing a light ground frost. Residents are advised to protect sensitive plants and bring pets indoors overnight as another cool morning is expected Saturday before a gradual weekend warmup.
The National Weather Service notes that temperatures should rebound into the 60s and 70s by Sunday afternoon as southerly winds return, marking a brief end to this week’s chill.
Warnings and advisories are not currently in effect, but residents should expect another cold dawn through Saturday.
