Newport, N.C. – Drivers across eastern North Carolina should prepare for slippery evening commutes as rain and gusty winds continue through Tuesday night. The National Weather Service warns gusts could top 24 mph, creating hazardous travel on local roadways, including Blackwater Road and U.S. 70. Officials urge drivers to slow down and avoid flooded areas.

According to the National Weather Service office in Morehead City, scattered showers remain possible overnight into early Wednesday, though coverage will taper off by mid-morning. Winds will gradually weaken, offering calmer conditions by Wednesday evening. Temperatures will hover in the mid-70s on Wednesday before warming into the 80s by Thursday.

Newport and surrounding Carteret County communities will see mostly cloudy skies Wednesday morning before sunshine takes over late in the day. Thursday and Friday bring the most stable conditions, with daytime highs reaching 81 to 83 degrees and comfortable overnight lows in the mid-60s.

The weekend turns more unsettled. Forecasters expect scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday night into Sunday, with a 40 percent chance of rain both days. Outdoor events could face interruptions, and lightning risks remain possible during storms.

Residents should secure outdoor items, allow extra travel time during evening commutes, and keep mobile alerts enabled for any advisories. While midweek brings improvement, more showers could arrive by early next week.
