New Bern, NC – A strong cold front is bringing the potential for severe thunderstorms across eastern North Carolina today, with threats including damaging winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding. Some areas could see wind gusts up to 70 mph, with isolated tornadoes possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, thunderstorms will be capable of producing intense rainfall, with localized totals between 3 and 7 inches where storms persist. Flash flooding is a major concern, especially in urban and low-lying areas.

Storms are expected to impact different parts of the region at varying times, with severe weather threats peaking in western areas between 2 p.m. and midnight, central areas from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m., and coastal communities from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The late-night timing raises additional safety concerns, and officials urge residents to have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during storms, and stay alert for potential flooding. Those in flood-prone areas should be prepared to seek higher ground if needed. The storm system is expected to move out by early Monday morning.
