Albany, New York – Drivers across eastern New York and neighboring parts of New England are dealing with slick, icy roads this morning as a widespread wintry mix lingers across the region during the peak commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect through late morning for much of eastern New York, western Massachusetts, southern Vermont, and northwestern Connecticut. Light additional snow up to one inch and ice accumulations around a tenth of an inch are possible as periods of snow, sleet, and freezing rain continue before tapering off.
The most impacted areas include the western and southern Adirondacks, the Mohawk and Schoharie Valleys, the eastern Catskills, the Helderbergs, and the Capital Region, including Albany, Saratoga Springs, Schenectady, and Glens Falls. Bridges, overpasses, untreated secondary roads, and sidewalks are especially prone to icing, making travel and walking hazardous.
Farther east, the Berkshires of Massachusetts and southern Vermont, including Bennington and Brattleboro, are also seeing slippery conditions that could slow traffic through the morning hours. Road crews have been treating major routes, but patchy ice may still catch drivers off guard.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. Conditions are expected to gradually improve later this morning, though isolated slick spots may persist even after precipitation ends.
