Albany, NY – New York is bracing for moderate to heavy rainfall as Storm Debby approaches Eastern New York and Western New England. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe weather alert, anticipating significant flooding from Friday into Friday night, with up to 4 inches of rain possible.

According to the NWS, urban and low-lying areas are at high risk for flooding. Expected rainfall totals range from 2 to 4 inches in many areas, with the potential for even higher amounts in localized spots. The heaviest rain is forecasted for regions including Watertown, Syracuse, and Albany, which could see 3 to 4 inches of rain by Friday night.

The NWS warns of scattered to numerous flash floods, including river flooding. Residents are advised to be cautious, particularly when driving. The safety message “Turn around, don’t drown!” emphasizes the danger of driving through flooded roadways. Over half of all flood fatalities occur in vehicles, highlighting the critical need for vigilance.

Meteorologists urge residents to stay informed and prepared. “We recommend everyone in the affected areas to monitor local weather updates and heed any evacuation orders,” said an NWS spokesperson. Emergency kits, including essentials like food, water, and medications, should be readily accessible.

The heavy rainfall is expected to impact travel and daily activities. Public transportation and roadways may face disruptions, and residents are advised to plan accordingly. The NWS also recommends securing outdoor objects and ensuring that drainage systems are clear to prevent additional hazards.
