Albuquerque, New Mexico – Winter weather is expected to return to parts of New Mexico late this week as Arctic air brings colder temperatures and a possible wintry mix.

According to the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque, eastern New Mexico will experience fluctuating temperatures through the week, with the coldest conditions arriving Friday and lingering into Saturday. An Arctic cold front is expected to move into the state late in the week, dropping temperatures to some of the coldest levels seen this season.

Precipitation is forecast to return Friday into Saturday statewide. Rain and snow will be the dominant precipitation types across western and central New Mexico, while snow is more likely in northeast New Mexico. Low chances remain for a wintry mix, including sleet or freezing rain, across east-central and southeastern parts of the state.

Forecasters said confidence is increasing in colder temperatures, but uncertainty remains regarding the exact timing of the approaching storm system and the amount and type of precipitation. This uncertainty is especially notable for areas where freezing rain could develop if temperatures hover near freezing.

Residents are encouraged to prepare now by protecting pipes, pets, and plants ahead of the colder weather. Commuters and travelers may want to monitor forecasts closely, as changing temperatures and precipitation types could affect road conditions late Friday and Saturday.

Officials stressed that forecast details will continue to be refined as the system approaches.
