Lincoln, Nebraska – Damaging winds, hail, and localized flooding could hit parts of Nebraska tonight as two rounds of storms push through the region, with the most intense weather expected between 4:30 p.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha and Hastings, a 30-50% chance of thunderstorms is in place for central and western Nebraska this evening, expanding into eastern Nebraska and western Iowa by late tonight. Some of these storms may become severe, capable of producing wind gusts over 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
A Level 2 (slight) risk zone includes cities such as Grand Island, Kearney, Norfolk, and Columbus. The highest threat window stretches from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., when isolated tornadoes and flash flooding could accompany stronger cells. A secondary area of storms is expected to develop in western Iowa by late afternoon.
Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and stay weather-aware overnight. NOAA radios and wireless alerts are advised due to the potential for late-night warnings.
Storm activity should taper off by Sunday morning, but additional advisories may follow depending on overnight developments.
