Hastings, Neb. – Residents across central and eastern Nebraska should prepare for strong storms late Friday as a severe weather system moves into the region between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., bringing damaging wind gusts and the potential for localized flooding.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the highest risk stretches from North Platte through Hastings to Beatrice, with storms capable of producing winds near 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters. While tornado chances remain low, the primary hazards include strong gusts and very heavy rainfall, especially during the evening and overnight hours.

Communities including Grand Island, Kearney, and McCook fall within the marginal risk zone, with isolated severe cells possible. Drivers along I-80 should use caution as wind-driven rain may reduce visibility and cause ponding on roadways. Power outages may also occur in areas impacted by the strongest wind gusts.

Residents are urged to avoid non-essential travel during the storm window, charge devices, and stay alert for possible flood advisories overnight. Rainfall could lead to localized flash flooding in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Severe weather risks remain focused through early Saturday, with additional updates likely this evening from NWS Hastings.
