Omaha, NE – Drivers across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa are waking up to dangerous road conditions this Thursday morning, as the National Weather Service in Omaha has issued a Dense Fog Advisory and Freeze Warning in effect until 10 a.m. CDT.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less in many areas, with temperatures dipping as low as 30°F. The freeze conditions could damage crops, sensitive plants, and unprotected outdoor plumbing, while the fog may cause slick bridges and overpasses, especially where moisture freezes.
The Dense Fog Advisory covers several counties including Douglas, Sarpy, Dodge, Washington, and Saunders in Nebraska, along with Monona, Pottawattamie, Harrison, and Shelby in Iowa. Cities such as Omaha, Bellevue, Fremont, Council Bluffs, and Wahoo are all affected.
Motorists are urged to slow down, use headlights, and allow extra distance between vehicles. The NWS warns that fog combined with subfreezing temperatures could produce patchy ice, particularly in low-lying and rural areas.
Conditions are expected to improve by mid-morning as temperatures rise and fog lifts. Until then, residents should cover plants, disconnect hoses, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible.
