Newport, N.C. – Heavy rainfall, strong wind gusts, and a possible isolated tornado are expected across eastern North Carolina Sunday evening, with the most intense weather targeting areas north of Highway 264.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, radar activity is rapidly increasing as storms form across the region. Cities from Greenville to Kill Devil Hills could see 3 to 5 inches of rain, with localized totals exceeding 8 inches in some spots. The greatest threat spans areas north of Hwy 264 and near the Albemarle Sound, where flash flooding is a serious concern.
Thunderstorms will continue developing through the evening, with high winds and brief tornadoes possible. Low-lying areas like Swanquarter, Belhaven, and Rodanthe may be especially vulnerable to rapid runoff and standing water. Downed trees and power outages are also possible as storms move through.
Residents should avoid non-essential travel, especially after dark, and secure outdoor items. Emergency kits, including flashlights and phone chargers, should be ready in case of outages.
Storm threats will remain active into late Sunday night, with updates expected from the NWS as conditions evolve.
