Billings, MT– Temperatures across Montana remain locked in summer mode Sunday, with highs running 15 to 20 degrees above normal in many areas. Cities including Billings, Miles City, and Sheridan will top out in the mid to upper 80s, with some spots approaching 90 degrees—well above late-September averages.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, the warmth will continue into Tuesday before cooler, wetter conditions gradually return later in the week. Outside of a slim 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms over the mountains this afternoon and evening, most communities will stay dry through Monday.
The unusual heat stretches from eastern Montana towns like Glendive, Baker, and Ekalaka to central cities such as Roundup, Columbus, and Lame Deer. Even higher elevations including Red Lodge and Livingston are holding in the upper 70s to low 80s, with Old Faithful dipping cooler at 69.
Travelers and residents are urged to take precautions, as the warmth paired with dry air will elevate fire danger in grasslands. Outdoor workers should stay hydrated, while ranchers and farmers should remain alert for quick-drying fields.
Conditions will turn more seasonable starting midweek, with cooler air and higher chances of rain spreading across the region. Additional advisories could follow as the pattern shifts.
