St. Louis and much of eastern Missouri are facing a windy day as a cold front moves through the region, bringing periods of rain followed by strong and potentially disruptive winds. According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, scattered showers are expected to move across the area this morning into the early afternoon, ahead of the approaching front. While rainfall amounts are not expected to be excessive, wet roads combined with increasing winds may lead to difficult driving conditions.
The most significant weather impacts are expected later today and into the evening hours as colder air rushes in behind the front. Wind gusts are forecast to strengthen rapidly, with gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour likely across much of northeast Missouri and west-central Illinois. A Wind Advisory is in effect from mid-afternoon through midnight, with the strongest winds expected between roughly 6 PM and 9 PM.
These gusty conditions may be strong enough to blow around unsecured outdoor objects such as patio furniture, trash cans, and holiday decorations. Residents are encouraged to secure loose items ahead of the strongest winds to reduce the risk of property damage. Power outages are not widespread but could occur in isolated locations where winds interact with weakened trees or power lines.
Travel conditions may also be affected, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and SUVs. Sudden crosswinds can make steering difficult, especially on open roadways and bridges. Drivers are urged to slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and remain alert for debris on roadways.
While winds are expected to gradually diminish overnight, breezy conditions may linger into early Friday. Staying weather-aware and taking simple precautions today can help minimize impacts as this strong but fast-moving system passes through the St. Louis region.
