Massachusetts – Light clouds thicken this morning, but the quiet won’t last. Snow begins falling later today, coating streets and sidewalks as commuters head home. The first flakes arrive quickly after sunset, sticking fast on cold pavement.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. this evening through 6 a.m. Wednesday. Snow totals range between 2 and 4 inches across eastern and northeastern Massachusetts. The advisory includes Boston, Cambridge, Lawrence, Lowell, Gloucester, and surrounding communities.

Temperatures hover near the low 30s this afternoon, then drop into the 20s as snow intensifies. Roads turn slick early, especially along I-93, Route 1, Route 128, and the Mass Pike. Visibility lowers during bursts of steady snow, slowing traffic during the evening commute. Crews will treat main roads, but untreated side streets may become snow-covered quickly.

Snow tapers before daybreak Wednesday. Skies clear during the morning, but cold air follows behind the system. Highs reach the mid-30s with sunshine, though refreezing remains a concern after sunset. Meltwater can harden into ice, increasing slip risks on sidewalks and parking lots.

Thursday and Friday stay dry but cold. Highs remain in the low to mid-30s with brisk breezes at times. Valentine’s Day weekend trends quieter, though clouds increase late with another chance for snow showers by Friday night or Sunday.

Looking ahead, NOAA’s 6–10 day outlook signals above-normal temperatures returning early next week. A gradual thaw may develop, even as the Great Lakes remain largely frozen, influencing regional weather swings.

For now, plan extra travel time tonight and slow down on snow-covered roads. Conditions change quickly after dark.
