Boston, Massachusetts – Eastern Massachusetts faces a 40% chance of moderate winter storm impacts this weekend, with periods of hazardous travel possible from 7 p.m. Friday through 7 p.m. Monday as a coastal storm system tracks north along the East Coast.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, a developing low-pressure system is expected to intensify off the Southeast coast Saturday before moving northeastward offshore of the Mid-Atlantic and New England by Sunday. Cold air already in place across the region may support snow, gusty winds, and reduced visibility if the storm tracks close enough to the coast.

Snow probabilities near 40% extend across eastern Massachusetts, including Greater Boston, the North Shore, and the South Shore, with potential impacts along Interstate 93, Interstate 95, and Route 128. Coastal locations may experience periods of rain or a rain-snow mix, while inland portions of eastern Massachusetts could see accumulating snow depending on the storm’s exact path and thermal setup.

Travel impacts are most likely late Saturday into Sunday as precipitation coverage and wind speeds increase. Gusty winds may reduce visibility on open roadways and bridges, particularly during heavier precipitation bands.

Forecasters stress that uncertainty remains regarding snowfall totals, precipitation type, and the storm’s precise track. Even small shifts could result in significantly different outcomes for eastern Massachusetts, especially near the coastline.

Residents are advised to monitor official forecasts and prepare for potential travel disruptions. Weekend commuters, students, and service workers should plan for delays or schedule changes if conditions deteriorate.
