Bakersfield, California – Travel across eastern Kern County could become dangerous within hours as wind gusts near 80 mph threaten to overturn vehicles and reduce visibility through Friday midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for eastern Kern and southeastern Tulare Counties until noon Friday. Sustained west winds between 25 and 35 mph will intensify, with powerful gusts capable of sudden crosswinds on exposed roadways.
High-profile vehicles, including trucks and RVs, face the greatest risk along highways such as State Route 58 and areas through the Tehachapi Pass, where strong winds frequently funnel and intensify. Blowing dust and debris could also reduce visibility, especially in open desert areas.
Officials warn that sudden gusts may require quick steering corrections, increasing the risk of rollovers. Drivers are urged to avoid travel if possible, or use extreme caution and keep both hands firmly on the wheel.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for isolated power disruptions where debris impacts lines.
The strongest winds are expected to continue through Friday morning before gradually easing by midday, though additional advisories may follow if conditions persist.
