Bakersfield, California – Fast-moving grass fires could ignite and spread rapidly across eastern Kern County through Thursday as strong winds and dry air intensify fire danger.
According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph through Thursday while relative humidity drops as low as 20 percent. These conditions create an environment where even small sparks can quickly grow into dangerous fires.
The threat continues into the weekend, with humidity slightly improving to 25–35 percent, but stronger winds developing. Gusts could reach up to 55 mph Friday through Sunday, increasing the risk of rapid fire spread across open areas and along roadways.
Communities including Ridgecrest, Mojave, and areas along Highway 58 should remain alert, especially during the afternoon and evening hours when winds peak.
Residents are urged to avoid activities that could spark fires, including using equipment that creates sparks or dragging chains from vehicles. Officials also recommend preparing emergency kits and reviewing evacuation routes.
Elevated fire danger remains in place through Sunday, with additional advisories possible if conditions worsen.
