PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Snow showers are blanketing the mountains of eastern Kentucky Monday, bringing slippery conditions and limited visibility across higher elevations from Bell to Pike and Letcher Counties. Forecasters say 1 to 4 inches of snow are possible by early Tuesday, with locally higher totals above 3,000 feet along the Virginia border.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EST Tuesday for Bell, Pike, Harlan, and Letcher Counties. Light to moderate snow will continue throughout Monday and Monday night, with the heaviest bursts above 2,000 feet, including along U.S. 119, KY 15, and KY 160 near the Black Mountain and Pine Mountain corridors.
Road crews report slick spots on mountain passes and shaded roads, and drivers are urged to slow down and use caution during the morning and evening commutes. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet warns that bridges and overpasses may ice first as temperatures hover near freezing.
Forecasters expect snow to taper off early Tuesday as drier air filters into the region. However, cold air behind the system will keep roads icy into the morning commute, especially in higher terrain.
