Jackson, Ky. – Drivers across eastern Kentucky should prepare for pockets of dense valley fog early Friday, with some areas seeing visibility fall to less than a quarter mile. The thickest fog is expected in low-lying valleys, potentially slowing traffic and making morning travel hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, calm winds, clear skies, and lingering humidity are fueling rapid fog formation in counties from Rowan and Estill to Pike and Harlan. Conditions will be especially treacherous along U.S. 23, the Mountain Parkway, and rural routes near rivers and hollows where fog settles deepest.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed, use low beam headlights, and allow extra time for travel during the morning commute. Fog could cause sudden drops in visibility, particularly when moving from ridge tops into valley areas.
The fog is expected to gradually lift between 8 and 9 a.m., leaving behind mostly sunny skies for the rest of the day. However, similar conditions could return in the early mornings this weekend if calm and clear weather persists.
