Morehead, Kentucky – Slippery roads and icy conditions continued to spread across eastern and southeastern Kentucky Sunday afternoon, raising concerns for overnight travel and the Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday for much of east-central, northeast, and southeast Kentucky. Periods of mixed precipitation are expected to continue into the night, with additional snow and sleet accumulations up to one inch and ice buildup around a light glaze in many communities.

Counties including Rowan, Bath, Montgomery, Fleming, Pulaski, Laurel, Floyd, Pike, Harlan, Whitley, and Knox remain under the warning. Cities such as Morehead, Mount Sterling, Somerset, London, Hazard, Prestonsburg, Pikeville, Corbin, and Harlan are likely to see slick and hazardous road conditions, especially on untreated surfaces. Bridges and overpasses are expected to freeze first as temperatures remain below freezing.

Emergency managers warn that even minor ice accumulation can quickly lead to crashes and stranded vehicles in the region’s hilly terrain. Drivers are urged to delay non-essential travel and reduce speeds if travel is unavoidable. Carrying emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, is strongly recommended.

Winter weather impacts are expected to ease toward daybreak Monday, but slick spots may linger into the morning commute. Warnings remain in effect through early morning, and additional updates may be issued if conditions persist longer than expected.
