Jackson, KY – The National Weather Service in Jackson is cautioning residents across eastern Kentucky to prepare for slick travel conditions overnight as patchy drizzle and fog develop across the region.

According to forecasters, temperatures are hovering around freezing, particularly in higher terrain and sheltered valleys, increasing the risk of freezing drizzle and isolated black ice. Even where air temperatures are slightly above freezing, road surfaces may still be cold enough to ice over, especially on untreated pavement.

Areas most at risk include Harlan, Hazard, Jackson, Pikeville, and Paintsville, where light icing may form on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roads. Motorists are advised to treat all damp roads as potentially icy, maintain safe following distances, and avoid abrupt braking or acceleration through curves and intersections.

Conditions are expected to improve by late Saturday morning as temperatures rise. However, early travelers should remain alert for hidden slick spots, particularly before sunrise.
