Jackson, Ky. – Damaging winds and isolated hail could disrupt travel and utilities across Kentucky Thursday as a cold front sparks strong to severe thunderstorms from the afternoon into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms is in place for areas generally north and west of a Middlesboro–Hazard–Paintsville line, including Lexington, Louisville, and Morehead. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) extends to southeastern regions, including Pikeville, Norton, and Prestonsburg.
Strong winds—potentially reaching locally damaging speeds—are the primary concern, but forecasters warn that isolated hail events can’t be ruled out. Communities such as Somerset, Campbellsville, and West Liberty should prepare for brief power outages or downed limbs by late afternoon.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways and secure outdoor objects that could become airborne. If thunder roars, head indoors—especially between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., when the storms are most likely to peak.
Thursday’s storm threat will diminish overnight, but additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen. Residents should monitor local updates and have weather alerts enabled on their phones.
