Jackson, Kentucky – Parts of eastern Kentucky could see rain and light snow showers late New Year’s Eve as a weather system passes north of the region, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

Forecasters say that after a generally dry but cold day, a low-pressure system moving just north of Kentucky will bring precipitation chances back into the area Wednesday and Wednesday night. The best chance for mainly light snow showers will be across northeastern sections of eastern Kentucky, while other areas may see a mix of rain and snow.

Temperatures on New Year’s Eve are expected to range from highs near 37 to 44 degrees, with overnight lows between 17 and 26 degrees, allowing for snowflakes to mix in as colder air moves through the region. Any snowfall is expected to be light, with limited impacts at this time.

The National Weather Service indicates that precipitation will taper off early New Year’s Day morning, leading to drier skies for Thursday. New Year’s Day temperatures are forecast to rebound slightly, with highs in the low to mid-40s.

While significant travel impacts are not anticipated, motorists traveling late Wednesday night should remain alert for isolated slick spots, especially on bridges and higher elevations in northeast counties.

For New Year’s Eve celebrations and early-morning commuters, the primary concern remains cold temperatures rather than widespread winter weather. Residents are encouraged to monitor forecast updates as timing and precipitation types may change.
