Harlan, Kentucky – Slick travel conditions continue across parts of eastern Kentucky early Saturday as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Harlan and Letcher counties through 9 a.m. Drivers in higher elevations are facing snow-covered roads as light snow and rain gradually taper off after sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, most valley locations are expected to see less than a half inch of snow, but areas above 2,500 feet could pick up between 1 and 3 inches before precipitation ends. Forecasters say lingering moisture and cold pavement may keep roads slippery even as snowfall eases.

Communities including Whitesburg, Cumberland, Jenkins, and Harlan are seeing the greatest impacts along mountain roads and untreated secondary routes. Steeper terrain and shaded areas are especially prone to slick spots, increasing the risk of slide-offs during the morning commute.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews continue to monitor conditions, but officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel in higher elevations until conditions improve. Real-time road conditions are available through GoKY.

The advisory is expected to expire mid-morning as precipitation ends, but motorists should remain cautious, as refreezing could persist on colder mountain roads even after the snow stops.
