Jackson, Kentucky – Storms are set to disrupt Father’s Day weekend plans across eastern Kentucky, bringing a multi-day threat of downpours and flash flooding.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, scattered thunderstorms will begin Friday afternoon, with the highest risk for heavy rainfall and strong winds Friday and Saturday. Localized flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas and near creeks and streams. Motorists on routes like US-23 and KY-80 should use caution, especially during afternoon and evening travel hours.
By Saturday night, thunderstorms remain likely, tapering to showers by Sunday morning. Areas from Pikeville to Hazard and Jackson may see rainfall totals between a quarter and half an inch — or more in thunderstorms. Sunday and Monday both bring high chances (80–90%) of continued rain and possible storms, especially in the afternoon and evening.
Torrential downpours could lead to flash flooding in isolated spots through Sunday. If you live in a flood-prone area or plan to travel across eastern Kentucky, have an alternate route ready and avoid crossing water-covered roads.
While no watches are in place yet, the NWS may issue flood advisories as conditions evolve. Stay weather-aware and check for alerts if you’re heading out this weekend.
More thunderstorms are expected through Wednesday, with a return to partly sunny skies by midweek.
