Kansas City, MO – A strong storm system will move through eastern Kansas and west-central Missouri today, bringing gusty winds, elevated to critical fire weather conditions, and rapidly changing weather, according to the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, light rain showers are possible early this morning, but the main concern will be strong winds developing through the afternoon and evening. Winds will shift from the southwest early today to the northwest later this afternoon, with gusts between 40 and 55 mph likely in many areas.

Forecasters have issued Wind Advisories and High Wind Warnings across parts of the region. In addition, critical fire weather conditions are expected this afternoon across portions of northeast and east-central Kansas and west-central Missouri, where a Red Flag Warning is in effect. Dry fuels combined with strong winds could allow fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

A brief burst of snow is also possible later today across far northern and northeastern Missouri as the cold front surges southeast. While accumulation is expected to be minimal, brief reductions in visibility could impact travel, especially along Highway 36 and nearby routes.

Despite temperatures climbing into the 40s and 50s today, conditions will turn sharply colder tonight. Wind chill values are expected to fall into the single digits and teens by Friday morning, with the coldest conditions across northern Missouri.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose objects, and use caution while traveling in strong winds. Rapid weather changes are expected throughout the day.
