With heat indices between 105 and 110 degrees expected, residents are advised to take frequent breaks and stay hydrated.
According to the US National Weather Service, the highest heat indices will be seen in areas like Joplin (110), Winfield (107), and Harper (105). Wichita is expected to reach a heat index of 103 degrees this afternoon and early evening.
This evening, hit-or-miss strong to marginally severe storms are possible across eastern Kansas. The best chances for storms will be after midnight, but not all areas will experience severe weather. The primary hazards include nickel-sized hail, wind gusts up to 65 mph, and locally heavy rain.
The forecast for Wichita shows temperatures reaching 93 degrees today with mostly cloudy conditions by 1 p.m. Sunday will bring a 55% chance of rain with temperatures cooling to 82 degrees. Monday is expected to be sunny with a high of 96 degrees, followed by Tuesday’s peak at 102 degrees. The midweek outlook includes cooler temperatures, with highs of 91 on Wednesday and 75 on Thursday.
