Quad Cities, IA/IL – The National Weather Service in the Quad Cities warns that an active stretch of winter weather will continue through the end of the week, culminating in a dangerous Arctic outbreak arriving this weekend.

Light snow is expected across northern portions of the area tonight, with additional snow chances returning Thursday and Saturday. The heaviest snow Thursday is likely along and north of Highway 30, with another round of light snow possible Saturday before the Arctic front surges through.

Behind the front, temperatures will plummet Saturday night into Sunday, with highs only in the single digits and overnight lows dropping below zero. The combination of frigid air and strong northwest winds will produce wind chills between –20°F and –35°F, posing a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia to anyone outdoors for extended periods.

The coldest wind chills are expected late Saturday night through Sunday morning, affecting communities including Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Dubuque, and Moline.

The NWS advises residents to:

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • Cover all exposed skin when outdoors.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and family members.
  • Ensure your home has a working carbon monoxide detector during heating season.

This Arctic blast will be followed by continued cold early next week, with gradual moderation in temperatures by midweek.
