QUAD CITIES, Iowa/Illinois – Extreme heat is gripping eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois today, with heat index readings climbing into the 100 to 105-degree range. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for the entire region, in effect until 7 p.m. CDT.
According to the NWS Quad Cities office, the combination of high temperatures and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The advisory covers major cities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, Moline, and Galesburg, as well as rural areas in far northeast Missouri.
Officials urge residents to limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day. Pets and livestock should be brought inside or given access to shade and plenty of water, as pavement and surfaces can become dangerously hot within minutes. Vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and those without air conditioning are at highest risk.
Cooling centers remain open in several counties, and residents are encouraged to check on neighbors who may be without adequate cooling. The heat is expected to ease overnight, but more advisories could follow if the high-pressure system lingers into the weekend.
