Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Much of eastern Iowa is under a winter storm warning as a powerful snow system brings 10 to 12+ inches of accumulation, wind gusts up to 30 mph, and blowing snow through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, snow began late Friday and will intensify by Saturday evening. The worst conditions are expected between 6 p.m. and midnight Saturday, with snowfall rates between 1 and 1.5 inches per hour and low visibility across major highways.
Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Dubuque, and Waterloo are in the high-impact zone, where snow and wind could make roads impassable Saturday night. Critical corridors like I-380, I-80, US-151, and US-218 will be particularly hazardous during the peak of the storm.
Officials recommend staying off roads unless absolutely necessary and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles. Snow will taper off from west to east early Sunday, but cleanup will continue through the day.
