Des Moines, IA – The tornado threat is rapidly expanding across Iowa this afternoon, now covering a large portion of the state with storms expected to intensify over the next several hours.

According to the Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 89 now includes more than 30 counties across central and eastern Iowa, including Polk, Linn, Scott, Johnson, and Dubuque counties. This places major population centers such as Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Davenport under the watch until 8 p.m. CDT.

Storms developing along this corridor are expected to strengthen through the late afternoon, with the potential for tornadoes, damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph, and large hail. The threat zone stretches along and north of Interstate 80, with conditions favorable for rotating storms capable of producing quick-hitting severe weather.

Travel along major routes including I-80, I-380, and U.S. 61 could become hazardous as storms develop, with sudden downpours and rapidly changing visibility.

Residents across central and eastern Iowa should remain weather-aware through the evening hours and be ready to take shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

The tornado watch remains in effect until 8 p.m., with additional warnings likely as storms intensify and track east across the state.
