Davenport, Iowa – Severe storms are expected to rapidly develop this afternoon, bringing a dangerous window for tornadoes and damaging winds across eastern Iowa and western Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, storms will develop and intensify between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., moving northeast at speeds near 60 mph. This fast motion means warnings may come with little lead time, especially across the Quad Cities, Cedar Rapids, and into northwest Illinois.
The primary threat includes damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, along with isolated tornadoes that could develop quickly within stronger cells. Large hail up to half-dollar size is also possible. The highest risk zone includes Davenport, Iowa City, Dubuque, and extends toward Sterling and Freeport, Illinois.
Major routes including I-80, I-74, and U.S. 61 could see sudden visibility drops, debris, and hazardous driving conditions during the late afternoon and evening commute.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be ready to take shelter immediately. Storms will move quickly, reducing reaction time.
The severe threat is expected to shift east later this evening, but additional watches and warnings are likely as storms develop.
