Quad Cities, IA/IL – Strong winds and dry conditions will create an elevated fire risk across eastern Iowa and northeast Missouri on Monday, prompting a Fire Weather Watch from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities.

The NWS warns that south winds of 15-25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph, will combine with humidity levels as low as 25% and unseasonably warm temperatures in the 70s to create critical fire weather conditions. Dry vegetation will further increase the risk of rapid fire spread.

A Red Flag Warning is also in effect for parts of southern Iowa and northern Missouri, where conditions are even more extreme. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, discard cigarette butts safely, and exercise caution with equipment that could spark fires.

Authorities recommend checking local fire restrictions before engaging in outdoor activities. Fire weather conditions are expected to improve late Monday night as winds decrease and humidity rises.
