Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Travel across eastern Iowa could become nearly impossible by late Sunday afternoon as powerful winds turn moderate snowfall into widespread whiteout conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday for much of eastern Iowa. Snow totals between 3 and 5 inches are expected, with the highest accumulations north of Highway 34. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph, blowing snow across roads and reducing visibility to near zero.

Cities including Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Dubuque, Muscatine, Burlington, and Fort Madison are expected to see rapidly deteriorating conditions Sunday evening. Major corridors such as Interstate 380, Interstate 80, and U.S. Highway 61 may experience drifting snow and sudden visibility drops overnight into the Monday morning commute.

Strong winds could also snap tree branches and create scattered power disruptions across Linn, Johnson, Dubuque, and surrounding counties. Emergency officials are urging residents to avoid non-essential travel as blizzard conditions intensify.

Anyone who must travel should pack blankets, water, food, and a fully charged phone in case of becoming stranded. Road conditions across the state are available through the Iowa DOT at 511ia.org or by dialing 511.

Blizzard conditions are expected to gradually improve after 1 p.m. Monday, though gusty winds and drifting snow may continue into the afternoon. Additional advisories remain possible as the storm develops.
