Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – Heavy rain and severe storms could slam eastern Iowa and western Illinois this afternoon, bringing a heightened threat of flash flooding, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes, especially between 2 and 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 a.m. Saturday. Rain totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts likely in areas that saw 2 to 4 inches overnight. Urban zones like Davenport, Moline, and Sterling are at particular risk for street flooding and ponding.

Widespread thunderstorms are expected to develop early this afternoon. Strong winds, frequent lightning, and torrential downpours are the primary hazards, though a few tornadoes can’t be ruled out, especially if a strong line of storms forms. Storms will taper off overnight, but flash flooding may linger into the early morning hours.

Residents in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Galesburg should avoid travel during peak storm hours. Charge your devices now and never drive through flooded roadways.

More alerts may be issued later today as conditions evolve. Stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
