Champaign, IL– Snow is sweeping across eastern Illinois this evening, creating icy travel from Danville to Decatur and prompting a Winter Weather Advisory through 6 a.m. Tuesday. With totals between 3 and 5 inches expected, roads are quickly becoming slick—especially during the Monday evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, snowfall intensified along the I-72 corridor Monday afternoon and will continue into early Tuesday. The most affected areas include Champaign, Urbana, Mattoon, Charleston, and Tuscola, with dangerous travel conditions reported along several major routes.
Illinois State Police are urging drivers to use extreme caution on highways including I-72, I-74, US-36, and US-51, where snow has already reduced visibility and coated surfaces. Secondary roads in Vermilion, Piatt, Macon, and Moultrie counties are also becoming hazardous, especially on bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze faster.
IDOT crews are plowing and salting across the region, but officials warn that road conditions will remain treacherous into the Tuesday morning drive. Motorists are advised to delay travel if possible and monitor updated traffic conditions at gettingaroundillinois.com.
Snow is expected to taper off by sunrise, but black ice and untreated roads may linger. Additional advisories are possible if conditions worsen overnight.
