Pueblo, CO. – Strong to severe thunderstorms could sweep across eastern Colorado on Friday, bringing hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, damaging wind gusts, and the threat of flash flooding. The National Weather Service in Pueblo warns the most dangerous storms are expected to form during the afternoon and linger into the evening hours.
According to the NWS, storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the highest risk focused across the eastern Plains, including communities near Lamar, Springfield, and Burlington. Locally heavy downpours could trigger flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and along small creeks and streams.
Pueblo, La Junta, and Trinidad may also see strong storms develop, though the most intense activity is expected farther east. Emergency officials remind drivers not to attempt to cross flooded roadways, stressing the message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Travelers on I-25 and Highways 50 and 287 should plan for rapidly changing conditions, reduced visibility, and possible detours if flooding occurs. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and keep phones charged in case of power outages.
Storm chances will decrease late Friday night, but additional showers could return through the weekend.
