Morristown, Tennessee – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across much of east Tennessee and adjacent southwest Virginia as heavy snow threatens hazardous travel through early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, 3 to 9 inches of snow are expected across the warned area, with wind gusts up to 35 mph. The warning continues until 1 a.m. EST Sunday.

Snowfall amounts will vary by location. Forecasters expect 3 to 6 inches from Lee County, Virginia, south toward the Interstate 40 corridor in Tennessee. Four to seven inches are forecast along the I-40 corridor and south toward the foothills of the east Tennessee mountains, with localized totals up to 9 inches possible in the foothills.

Counties under the warning include Claiborne, Hancock, Union, Grainger, Hamblen, Loudon, Knox, Jefferson, Blount, Sevier, Monroe in Tennessee, along with Lee County, Virginia. Affected communities include Knoxville, Morristown, Maryville, Alcoa, Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, Jefferson City, Dandridge, Lenoir City, Loudon, Sneedville, and Harrogate.

The National Weather Service warns that travel could become difficult by Friday evening, with hazardous conditions expected overnight into Saturday as snowfall accumulates. Snow-covered roads, slick bridges, and reduced visibility are likely, especially during periods of steadier snowfall.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, and check current road conditions by calling 511.

Snowfall across mountainous terrain may slow road treatment and prolong hazardous conditions, particularly on secondary routes and higher elevations. Commuters, students, and weekend travelers should plan for delays and potential disruptions across the region.
