Morristown, TN – Strong winds continue early this morning across the mountains of East Tennessee, where a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM Sunday. Forecasters warn that gusts up to 45 mph may cause downed limbs, scattered outages, and difficult driving, especially in high terrain.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, sustained west winds of 10 to 20 mph will be common, with peak gusts focused along ridgelines above 3,000 feet. The advisory covers counties including Johnson, Unicoi, Carter, Greene, Monroe, and the Blount and Sevier Smoky Mountains, with the strongest winds near exposed peaks of the Smokies.

Forecasters note that early morning travel along mountainous corridors—including US-321, US-19E, US-441 (Newfound Gap Road), and Foothills Parkway—may be impacted by sudden gusts. Lightweight outdoor equipment, holiday decorations, and loose debris may be blown around if not secured before sunrise.

While valley locations will see lighter winds, the combination of cold air drainage and gusty conditions across the higher elevations may still cause isolated tree damage or power flickers.

Winds are expected to gradually diminish after daybreak as the weather system responsible moves east and pressure gradients weaken through the morning.
